Protocol

Description

RFC

Character Generator (CHARGEN)

Sends data made up of the set of 95 printable ASCII characters. Useful as a debugging tool for testing or troubleshooting line printers.

864

Daytime

Returns messages containing the day of the week, month, day, year, current time (in hh:mm:ss format), and time-zone information. Some programs can use the output from this service for debugging or monitoring variations in system clock time or on a different host.

867

Discard

Discards all messages received on this port without response or acknowledgment. Can serve as a null port for receiving and routing TCP/IP test messages during network setup and configuration or, in some cases, can be used by programs as a message discard function.

863

Echo

Echoes back data from any messages it receives on this server port. Can be useful as a network debugging and monitoring tool.

862

Quote of the Day (QUOTE)

Returns a quotation as one or more lines of text in a message. Quotations are taken at random from the following file: systemroot\System32\Drivers\Etc\Quotes. A sample quote file is installed with the Simple TCP/IP Services. If this file is missing, the quote service fails.

When you create a home or small office network, computers running Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Home Edition are connected to a local area network (LAN). When you install a network adapter, Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition detects the adapter, and a local area connection is created. It appears, like all other connection types, in the Network Connections folder. By default, a local area connection is always activated. A local area connection is the only type of connection that is automatically created and activated.

If you disconnect your local area connection, the connection is no longer automatically activated. Because your hardware profile remembers this, it accommodates your location-based needs as a mobile user. For example, if you travel to a remote sales office and use a separate hardware profile for that location that does not enable your local area connection on your home network, you do not waste time waiting for your network adapter to time out. The adapter does not even try to connect.

If your computer has more than one network adapter, a local area connection icon for each adapter is displayed in the Network Connections folder.

You can create local area networks using Ethernet, wireless, home phoneline (HPNA), cable modems, DSL, and IrDA (Infrared).

If changes are made to your network, you can modify the settings of an existing local area connection to reflect those changes. For information about modifying a connection, see To configure a connection. With the Status menu option in Network Connections, you can view connection information such as connection duration, speed, amounts of data transmitted and received, and any diagnostic tools available for a particular connection. For information about using the Status menu option, see To view the status of a local area connection.

If you install a new network adapter in your computer, the next time you start your computer, a new local area connection icon appears in the Network Connections folder. Plug and Play functionality finds the network adapter and creates a local area connection for it. You can add a PC card while the computer is on, and you do not have to restart your computer. The local area connection icon is immediately added to the folder. You cannot manually add local area connections to the Network Connections folder.

You can configure multiple network adapters through the Advanced Settings menu option. You can modify the order of adapters that are used by a connection, and the associated clients, services, and protocols for the adapter. You can modify the provider order in which this connection gains access to information on the network, such as networks and printers.

You configure the device a connection uses, and all of the associated clients, services, and protocols for the connection, through the Properties menu option. Clients define the access of the connection to computers and files on your network. Services provide features such as file and printer sharing. Protocols, such as TCP/IP, define the language your computer uses to communicate with other computers.

Depending on the status of your local area connection, the icon changes appearance in the Network Connections folder, or a separate icon appears in the notification area. If a network adapter is not detected by your computer, a local area connection icon does not appear in the Network Connections folder. The following table describes the different local area connection icons.

Icon

Description

Location

The local area connection is active

Make a local area connection

If you have a network adapter installed, and have set up a home or small office network, you are connected to a local area network (LAN). You are also connected to a LAN if your Windows XP Professional computer is part of a corporate network. When you start your computer, your network adapter is detected and the local area connection automatically starts. Unlike other types of connections, the local area connection is created automatically, and you do not have to click the local area connection in order to start it.

Notes

A local area connection is automatically created for each network adapter that is detected.

If more than one network adapter is installed, you can eliminate possible confusion by immediately renaming each local area connection to reflect the network that it connects to.

If your computer has one network adapter, but you need to connect to multiple LANs (for example, when traveling to a regional office), the network components for your local area connection need to be enabled or disabled each time you connect to a different LAN.

If more than one network adapter is installed, you need to add or enable the network clients, services, and protocols that are required for each local area connection. When you do so, the client, service, or protocol is added or enabled for all other network and dial-up connections.

The Facebook Desktop for Adobe AIR application is now available. You can install it here. Note: You must have Adobe AIR installed for the application to work. You can download Adobe AIR for free here.

When you want to stay updated with your friends and other connections
on Facebook, you can log into your home page to see a running timeline,
or stream, of the information they’re sharing. The more they share, the
more you see in the stream and the more you learn about your
connections. Starting today, you have the option to access that same
stream outside of Facebook.com.

Now, you’ll be able to view your stream and publish information into it
from places you never could before — like your desktop computer or your
mobile phone. Your stream will appear just as it does on Facebook.com
and maintain the same privacy settings. We believe that the ability to
see more and more of what is happening around you will lead to greater
openness and transparency.

To make this work, we released new technology for developers
so they can offer this option to you on other websites and
applications. We work closely with third-party developers to enable
intriguing and meaningful experiences both on and off Facebook.com.
Since we launched Facebook Platform in 2007, developers have created
10s of thousands of applications
to help you connect and share with your friends in interesting ways —
whether by playing a social game, discovering new books or creating
group greeting cards.

Last year, we announced Facebook Connect
to make it easy for you to take your online identity with you across
the Web and share what you do online with your friends back on Facebook
by publishing your actions to the stream. Today’s announcement is an
extension of that by making it easy for you to interact with your
stream from anywhere.

We’ve already worked with a few developers to build some of these new
experiences for you to try out, and we’ve created one ourselves, as
well. Beginning later today, you’ll be able to find these and future
applications in the Facebook Application Directory under “For Your Desktop.”

For instance, you’ll be able to install Facebook Desktop for Adobe AIR and connect using your Facebook account.

Then, you’ll receive two prompts: the first to give permission for the
application to access your News Feed and Wall and the second to give
permission to publish posts and comments.

From there, you’ll be able to interact with your stream just as you
would on Facebook but directly from your desktop rather than through a
browser. You’ll be able to do all the same things you would normally do
on Facebook, including view your friends’ content and share information
through the Publisher. You can even “Like” and comment on your friends’
stories directly from your desktop.

Be sure to also check out Seesmic’s desktop application, which includes your stream from Facebook and adds feeds from other websites, too.

In the coming months, you’ll be able to interact with your stream on
even more websites and through more applications, in ways we’re only
beginning to imagine.

1. Why Run Linux?

This chapter introduces you to the upstart operating system Linux. It helps you determine whether Linux is right for you, by surveying the features and performance that Linux offers. It demonstrates that choosing Linux is a practical - even wise - decision for many computer users. The chapter also helps you feel at home with Linux and other Linux users, by introducing you to the history and culture of Linux. Finally, it points you to some popular gathering places on the Internet where you can correspond with other Linux users, get up-to-the-minute Linux news and information, and obtain free technical support.

1.1 Linux at Home and at Work

Perhaps you learned about Linux from a trusted friend, whose enthusiasm and ready answers convinced you to learn more about Linux, or perhaps an article or anecdote that mentioned Linux simply sparked your curiosity. In any case, you may find it interesting to learn what other computer users, ranging from PC hobbyist to guru, have accomplished by using Linux:

Tired of slow telephone modem transfer rates, a PC owner leases a cable modem that provides high-speed transfers. He installs the new modem in a Linux system that routes packets to and from the computers of other family members. Now the entire family can simultaneously surf the Web at warp speed.

Struggling to complete a dissertation, a graduate student determines that most of his problems stem from bugs and inadequate features of his word processing program. Dumping Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Word, he loads Linux onto his computer and uses free text processing software he downloads from the Web. In contrast to the frequent system hangs and lost work he experienced with Windows, his new system runs for over 100 days before needing to be shutdown for installation of new hardware.

Considered among the world’s best, the experienced graphics artists at Digital Domain have generated visual effects for such films as Apollo 13, Dante’s Peak, The Fifth Element, Interview with the Vampire, and True Lies. But when director James Cameron selected Digital Domain to conjure visual effects for Titanic, the artists faced a task of unprecedented size and complexity. Concerned to obtain enormous computing power at the lowest cost, they purchased 160 DEC Alpha computers. Most DEC Alpha users run Microsoft Windows NT or Digital Unix as an operating system. However, Digital Domain chose to run Linux on 105 of their new computers. If you’ve seen Titanic and Digital Domain’s breathtaking effects, you know what a good decision this was.

Needing a supercomputer, but having a budget sufficient for only a minicomputer, scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory created Avalon, a system of 70 networked computers that run Linux. Instead of millions of dollars, the scientists spent only about $152,000 - none of it on software, because Linux is free. Their Avalon system performs more than 10 billion floating-point operations per second, roughly on par with the Silicon Graphics Origin2000 system, which costs $1.8 million. Linux-based Avalon ranks as the 315th fastest computer in the world.

Linux began as a hacker’s playground, but has become progressively easier to use and consequently more popular: today, perhaps as many as 7.5 million computers run Linux. Many Linux users are not hackers, but relatively ordinary computer users. Linux has become an operating system of formidable appeal and potential:

In 1996, computing trade magazine Infoworld named Linux “Best Computer Desktop Operating System.” A year later, they named the Linux community “Best Tech Support Organization.”

The cover of the August 10, 1998, issue of the influential business magazine Forbes featured super-programmer Linus Torvalds, author of the Linux kernel. The article pointed out that Intel, IBM, Netscape, Oracle, and other computing industry giants have taken a keen commercial interest in Linux and other open-source software.

Market research firm International Data Corporation reported that in 1998, Linux held 17.2% of the server operating system market, up 212% from 1997. In contrast, Microsoft’s flagship operating system, Windows NT, held a 36% market share - barely twice as great.

Lawyers defending Microsoft against the U.S. government’s antitrust charges argued that Linux poses a real threat to Microsoft’s domination of the desktop operating systems market.
